Institute of Biomedicine and Pharmacy

The Institute of Biomedicine and Pharmacy (IBMP) of the Russian-Armenian University was founded in 2018, because of the reorganization of the Institute of Mathematics and High Technologies of the Russian-Armenian University.

The mission of IBMP is to provide advanced, continuous and comprehensive training of highly qualified personnel capable of productive work in the field of biomedicine, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and agriculture.

The goal of IBMP is to create a leading scientific and educational center in the areas of biomedicine, bioinformatics, biotechnology and pharmacy.

The tasks of the IBMP are:

development and implementation of a research-oriented, continuous and multi-level educational process (specialist, bachelor's degree - master's degree - postgraduate study - doctoral studies),
implementation of active interdisciplinary research activities in various fields of sciences,
development of a system of scientific, pedagogical and methodological schools that ensure the development and implementation of the latest achievements in the educational process in subject areas,
creation of a system of vertical and horizontal network partnerships with potential employers and educational institutions of secondary and higher professional education in order to train specialists competitive in the labor market.

IBMP has three departments:
Department of Bioengineering, Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology (organized on the basis of the Institute of Molecular Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia),
Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biotechnology,
Department of General and Pharmaceutical Chemistry,

Highly professional teaching staff carry out the teaching of specialists at the Institute. Two corresponding members NAS RA are involved in the implementation of the educational process and the training of scientific and pedagogical personnel as well as 10 doctors and 34 PhD of sciences. The institute has mobility programs that allow our students from the very beginning to become part of the international scientific community, to acquire useful and interesting acquaintances with students and scientists around the world.
IMBP graduates make up the contingent of the most sought-after specialists. Interdisciplinary and research-oriented education, research skills, as well as language training have allowed the graduates of the departments of our institute to apply their knowledge in various fields both in Armenia and abroad. Most of our graduates are employed both in the academic institutions of the Armenian Academy of Sciences and in commercial organizations operating in the fields of healthcare, agriculture, bioinformatics and IT.

Institute Director

Arsen A. Arakelyan - Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Director of the Institute of Biomedicine and Pharmacy and Chairman of the Academic Council of IBMP RAU, Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology of the NAS RA.

Arsen Arakelyan holds a PhD degree from 2004 and Doctor of Sciences degree from 2020 in Molecular and Cellular biology. In 2011, he founded a group of genomic bioinformatics, specializing in the development of algorithms and software packages for the analysis of large genomic data and their application in studies of the molecular mechanisms of chronic human diseases. He is the author of over 100 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, a member of various scientific communities. In 2015, he was elected as a head of the Department of Bioengineering, Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology of the Institute of Mathematics and High Technologies of RAU and Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology NAS RA. Since 2018 he has been the director of the Institute of Biomedicine and Pharmacy of RAU.
