Description
The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biotechnology was founded on the basis of the Faculty of Medical Biology, which was operating since 2004.  During the 2004-2017 period, the head of the department was Dr. of Biological Sciences, Professor H.R. Vardapetyan. Starting from 2018 the head of the department is Ph.D., Associate Professor A.A. Hovannisyan.
The educational process of the department is carried out in two degrees:
Specialist degree: 30.05.01 specialty "Medical biochemistry", full-time studying, the standard period of mastering the basic educational program is 6 years.
Postgraduate studies for the following specialties: S.00.08 Zoology, Parasitology, Ecology, G.00.04, and 1.5.4. Biochemistry. The standard period for mastering the basic educational program is 4 years (for the Russian section) and 3 years (for the Armenian section).
The department also has Master's programs:
Master's degree programs: "Materials and technologies for medicine and biotechnology" and "Biomedical Engineering" (in the frame of TEMPUS). In the case of full-time studying, the standard period for mastering the basic educational program is 2 years.
Research activities of the department
On the basis of the department, have been created six educational and two research laboratories, which are considered one of the best in their field and are equipped with modern equipment. Laboratories of "Analytical Biochemistry and Biotechnology" and "Structural bioinformatics" have been created.
The department and laboratories main research areas are:
* Analytical biochemistry;
* Green and red biotechnology,
* Nanobiotechnology,
* Study of secondary metabolites of plants
The department is actively involved in the organization of scientific discussions, conferences, and round tables on various topics. We give utmost attention to the scientific potential of our students via creating research opportunities with leading universities in the region and abroad.
